We recognise the key role of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in achieving this end and will lobby for the establishment of AWE as an international centre of excellence for Disarmament Verification”

  “The emergency plan for the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) published in September 2009 gives a chilling insight into the grim consequences of a major accident at an AWE site. The plan shows that a radiation release from an AWE site would have a massive local impact, and would result in a regional, if not national mobilisation of resources in response.”

  The 'Gravel Gerties' at AWE Burghfield, after the floods in 2007.

  The spotlight has been on AWE Burghfield this year. Burghfield is situated between Aldermaston and the conurbation of Reading, and its location in the floodplain of the Kennet Valley accounted for the flooding there in July 2007. The event was played down by AWE but NIS’s report “Swamped”, records just how serious it really was. The report was taken up by Channel 4 News in October and subsequently by local, regional and other national media.

  "2007 got off to a lively start with NIS giving oral evidence to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee on Trident replacement, followed by an Application for Judicial Review of the Government’s processes for public consultation on this same issue, to be heard in June 2008. Another important development is NIS’s follow up on the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE)’s warhead authentication verification techniques. At a meeting with AWE experts and the MOD initiated by NIS in January, our Executive Director, Di McDonald, was able to introduce the concept that AWE’s verification work needs to progress faster towards real disarmament – not least by the UK itself." - Evelyn Parker, NIS Chair writing in the Annual Report 2007

  NIS facilitated a fact -finding Scottish delegation of MSPs, Church leaders and a former Lord Advocate to AWE Aldermaston where AWEML refused to meet them and police penned delegates in at the gate in June 2006.
