NIS Update: March 2015

This month's NIS Update newsletter reports on problems at the Atomic Weapons Establishment which have led to major construction projects being placed 'on hold', and on staffing challenges faced by the Ministry of Defence's nuclear programmes.  We have news on an increase in nuclear safety incidents at the Trident submarine base on the Clyde, and also analyse a government statement on reductions to the UK's deployed nuclear warhead capability.

NIS Update: December 2014

Our final NIS Update newsletter for 2014 leads with a round-up of news from the third international conference on the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons which took place in Vienna earlier this month.  We report on new developments in the programme to replace the UK's Trident nuclear weapons submarines, and also detail the latest steps in co-operation on research into nuclear warhead science between the UK and France.

NIS Update: November 2014

November's Update newsletter reports on the planned parliamentary debate on renewal of the US/UK Mutual Defence Agreement, an increase in nuclear safety incidents at Clyde submarine bases, the start of consultations on interim storage sites for radioactive waste from nuclear submarines, and a blog article on a serious nuclear submarine mass casualty incident.  We are also delighted to welcome our new Patron, Jonathon Porritt.

NIS Update: September - October 2014

Our NIS Update newsletter for September and October contains stories about a £200,000 fine for Rolls-Royce Marine Power Operations Ltd after the company pleaded guilty to breaching radiation safety regulations, and enforcement action against the Atomic Weapons Establishment over radioactive waste management arrangements. We also publish information obtained using the Freedom of Information Act about safety and reliability concerns relating to the vehicles used by the Ministry of Defence to transport nuclear materials.

NIS Update: August - September 2014

The NIS update newsletter for August and September reports on Rolls Royce pleading guilty in court to exposing workers to high level radiation at their nuclear reactor factory in Derby. We also cover the 'below standard' emergency arrangements at Barrow nuclear submarine shipyard and disclose FOI records revealing dozens of safety incidents during nuclear warhead road convoys. You can also read about AWE Managing Director Andrew Jupp stepping down and the Office for Nuclear Regulation's recent UK fissile material holdings report.

NIS Update: July - August 2014

This month's NIS Update newsletter contains news about renewal of a controversial US-UK treaty allowing the sharing of nuclear weapons technology; a report from the UK nuclear safety regulator which states that an enhanced level of regulation is necessary at the Atomic Weapons Establishment; and a power outage incident at the Rolls-Royce nuclear submarine reactor factory in Derby.

NIS Update: July 2014

We're back after a short break!  Our NIS Update newsletter for July 2014 contains news about faults with fire alarm systems at the Atomic Weapons Establishment and an accidental torpedo launch at the Devonport naval dockyard.  We also report on a major spending programme at the BAE Systems Barrow shipyard to allow construction of new Trident submarines, and arrangements for allowing contractors at defence nuclear sites to escape liability for compensation in the event of a major accident.

NIS Update: March 2014

The NIS Update newsletter for March contains news about plans to drastically extend co-operation on nuclear warhead physics between the UK and France, and two new reports which stake out the ground for debate over the decision on Trident replacement. Radioactive waste issues are under the spotlight at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, with regulators considering enforcement action against the Establishment over waste processing and news that Establishment sites have been shortlisted as candidates for the storage of radioactive waste from decommissioned submarines.

NIS Update: January 2014

Our NIS Update newsletter for January 2014 contains coverage of the Defence Secretary's annual report to Parliament on progress with the Trident replacement programme and a new analysis of the costs of the Trident replacement programme from the Royal United Services Institute.  We report on security shortfalls among police officers at the Atomic Weapons Establishment and also publish the results of our annual review of standards of openness and transparency at the Establishment.

NIS Update: October 2013

Our first issue of NIS Update since the summer contains news about enforcement action at the Atomic Weapons Establishment following a tritium leak; a threat to nuclear safety posed by a power failure at Devonport nuclear submarine base; and action taken by local councils and emergency services to block plans to reduce the size of the nuclear emergency planning zone at the Atomic Weapons Establishment Aldermaston.
